When is a Dockside Exam Required?
Depending upon several factors, some Commercial Fishing Industry Vessels are required to maintain a valid CFVS Decal (every 2 years). Or a valid Certificate of Compliance (COC) (every 2 years) in addition to a CFVS Decal. While others are required to complete a CFVS exam every 5 years. Or may choose to complete a CFVS exam or maintain a valid CFVS Decal voluntarily.

Preparing for your Dockside Exam
Step 1: Gather specific information about your vessel (length, gross tonnage, areas of operation, types of fisheries, etc.) and use the Launch Vessel Checklist Generator to get a list of applicable items.
Step 2: Use the checklists to self-examine your vessel. Ensure you have all the required equipment and everything is in serviceable condition. Using this tool will greatly increase the odds of passing the exam on the first visit.
You can view additional information or mini-checklists for each item by selecting the "Info" button to the right of each item.
Step 3: Call to schedule a dockside exam. Call your nearest Coast Guard Commercial Fishing Vessel Safety Examiner CG link or USCG Accepted Third Party Organization TPO link to schedule a visit to your vessel. If your vessel meets all applicable safety regulations, you will be issued a decal and written documentation that your vessel has passed the exam. The exam decal is valid for 2 (two) years.
Step 4: Keep equipment up to date and in serviceable condition. Items such as inflatable life rafts, hydrostatic release units, EPIRB batteries, NOAA EPIRB registrations, distress signals, etc. expire. Check these items on a regular basis.
